Blood letting. Leaches. Trepanation. Lobotomies. Some took longer than others to phase out, but doctors eventually learned these outdated procedures were no longer (if ever) effective. Medicine and knowledge evolved and drilling holes into one’s skull to relieve migraines seemed nutty. So if doctors learned to stop using outdated procedures, why are they still using outdated technologies?
Pagers reached their peak more than 20 years ago, and since then have been on the fast decline – except in healthcare. In a report conducted by HIMSS Analytics and commissioned by TigerText, researchers found that 90% of healthcare organizations still use pagers. But what is even more surprising, is the actual cost of pagers. Beyond monthly fees, pagers have many hidden costs and inefficiencies that lead to delays in patient care.
